Portland Timbers has secured the services of Gaston Nicolas Fernandez. The MLS club has bought the Argentinean player from Estudiantes LP.
This is the first time that Fernandez is going to play in USA. So far, he has played club football only in two countries i.e. Mexico and Argentina.
The striker who has got into his thirties now has been around since a long time. He had begun his senior career 11 years back with River Plate and had performed decently over there during his 4-year long tenure before making a move to San Lorenzo in 2007.
Estudiantes was the club where Fernandez achieved the maximum amount of success. He played close to 100 league games there and found the net more than 20 times. It was his consistency there that impressed the Timbers scouts and he ended up getting an MLS contract.
As far as Fernandez’ overall record in club football is concerned, it’s certainly not the best, but, it’s not the worst either. He has put up some good performances playing in the Mexican and Argentinean first division.
The Timbers GM, Mr. Gavin Wilkinson, announced in a press conference yesterday that Fernandez is arriving at Jeld-Wen Field.
Wilkinson said, “Gaston is one of those players who have been tried and tested. He has had a lot of good times playing in Argentina of late and I hope that he keeps performing well here too. We are glad to have him as a part of our squad.”
The last season was one of the best seasons ever for the Timbers. They had lost just 5 matches in their entire MLS campaign and had become the first positioned team in the Western Conference points table. Their points’ tally at the end of the regular season was showing 57.
