David Villa’s short tenure at Melbourne City came to an end during the weekend after he returned to New York City.
Preparations for the new MLS campaign are underway and this will be the debut campaign for New York City FC, who managed to create a lot of headlines by signing both David Villa and Frank Lampard as their marquee players. Since there was a few months gap between the actual season start, Lampard joined Manchester City on a short-term loan spell while Villa came to the Australian a late to play with Melbourne City.
It has been a difficult start to the season for the club, as they went four matches without a win. Even though Villa played in these four matches, they were unable to get the best out of the Spanish record goalscorer. In a stellar career that saw him play for the likes of Valencia, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid, Villa not only emerged with a lot of trophies but also with his reputation as one of the best finishers in the game. Even though his spell with Melbourne City has not been the best, CEO Scott Munn says that he is very much working towards the possibility of bringing the player back in December for a short spell.
“It was pretty incredible for us to have David here and in terms of what he contributed to the club and to the players was fantastic. We’re really confident that there is still more opportunity for David to come back and continue to work with us – it’s pretty cold in the middle of winter in New York. His work ethic [and] the way he conducted himself was something that I’ve never seen with elite athletes. It was absolutely a level above and it was great for us as a club and I think for the general public,” said Munn.
