While it is not the sort of transfer news Manchester United fans will be expecting at this point, the Red Devils have confirmed that they have completed the re-signing of their former goalkeeper Tom Heaton from Premier League side Aston Villa. Heaton had been linked with a return to United for quite some time now but manager Olé Gunnar Solksjær did not want to make any serious move for the veteran goalkeeper because he still had a lot of options in that position, including David De Gea, Dean Henderson, Sergio Romero, and Lee Grant.
Manchester United signed Lee Grant from Stoke City last season and made him an addition to the squad but he did not get the chance to play Premier League minutes, with Henderson and De Gea both fighting to earn a starting spot under Solksjær. Romero is expected to leave the club in the coming weeks after falling out with the club s management, meaning that Grant, Henderson, and De Gea would have been the three senior options the club have in goal but Heaton will now make the number four.
Heaton signed a one-year contract at United but it is not clear whether there is a clause in the deal that says he can extend for a further year. However, the battle for the number one spot between the sticks is still being closely fought between the club’s top two goalie options in David De Gea and Dean Henderson.
